Pfitzner crowned state champion, Lady Irish take 2nd at State Championship

MARYVILLE, MO — At only three years old, the Lady Irish golf has matured from a fledgling program to one of the top in the state. 2018 was a historic season for the team. Kayla Pfitzner would return as a 2-time state qualifier and she would be joined by her younger sister Kyleigh Pfitzner, teammate Ellen Moore and incoming Freshman Reagan Zibilski. Coach Gallant seemed to know that he had a special team on his hands but not even he could anticipate what the team would accomplish.

The girls were near perfect in tournament play, winning every regular-season tournament and finishing up the year with championships in their inaugural Conferenence tournament, Districts and finally Sectionals. All along, the way breaking multiple MSHSAA team scoring records. The stellar play would qualify the team for a trip to Maryville to compete against 7 of the best 1A teams in the state.

Play opened up Monday to a frigid October morning and temps in the low to mid 40's. The combination of the weather and the course difficulty would push the scores up from previous tournaments. Kayla Pfitzner and Reagan Zibilski once again led the Lady Irish with rounds of 80 and 81 respectively. Those score would also lead the field, putting the duo at the top of the day 1 leaderboard with a 2-stroke lead over Eldon's Kassidy Hull. The team's score of 362, would also place them atop the team leaderbaord with a 1-stroke lead over the John Burroughs team from St. Louis.

Tuesday play would shotgun start in the afternoon and the weather was much more conducive to scoring. Temps would reach the upper 60's, over 20 degrees warmer than Monday. While the temps raised, the scores would drop on the second day. Kayla and Reagan would once again battle throughout the day, stretching their lead on the field. It became apparent by the turn that the State Champion would certainly come from Springfield Catholic. At the end of the day, Kayla would maintain her first round lead by firing a second round 74. Teammate Reagan Zibilski would shoot a solid 75 to claim 2nd as a Freshman.

The team score would not be determined until all the scores were turned in. It looked throughout the day like the team would win but in the end, John Burroughs won by 2-strokes with a two-day team total of 701. While many on this team may not be satisfied with the 2nd place finish, this is just the beginning for this team as they will return their #1, #2, and #3 players next season.

Pfitners championship is the first ever for Springfield Catholic golfer (boy or girl) and the first individual State Championship since Stephen Kielhofner claimed the Cross Country title in 2017.
